A leaking gutter might seem like a minor nuisance, but left unchecked it can cause damp walls, stained brickwork, and even foundation damage. The good news is that most gutter leaks come from failed joints or small holes — both of which are cheap and easy to fix without replacing the entire run.
Common Causes of Gutter Leaks
- Failed joint seals — the most common cause. Rubber gaskets in plastic guttering degrade over 10–15 years
- Blocked gutters — water overflows rather than draining, which looks like a leak from below
- Small holes or cracks — from impact damage or UV degradation in plastic guttering
- Sagging sections — incorrect fall means water pools instead of flowing to the downpipe
- Corroded metal guttering — cast iron or aluminium gutters develop pinhole leaks over time
What You’ll Need
- Gutter sealant (CT1 or Geocel Plumber’s Gold work well)
- Wire brush or coarse sandpaper
- Clean cloths and white spirit
- Ladder with a standoff (never lean a ladder directly against guttering)
- Gutter repair tape (for holes and cracks)
- Replacement gutter union clips (if the joint mechanism is broken)
How to Fix a Leaking Gutter Joint
Step 1: Clean the Gutter Thoroughly
Remove all debris — leaves, moss, silt. You need to see exactly where the leak is. Run water through with a hose or watering can and watch for drips from below. Mark any leak points with tape so you can find them when you’re working from the ladder.
Step 2: Separate the Joint
For plastic guttering, pop the joint apart by lifting the gutter section out of the union clip. This usually means unclipping the retaining lip and sliding the gutter section out. For cast iron guttering, you’ll typically be working in place — skip to the sealant step. The B&Q gutter repair guide has good illustrations of different gutter joint types.
Step 3: Clean the Mating Surfaces
Remove the old gasket or sealant completely. Clean both surfaces with white spirit and let them dry thoroughly. For cast iron gutters, use a wire brush to remove any rust back to clean metal. The surfaces need to be clean, dry, and free of any old sealant for the new seal to bond properly.
Step 4: Apply New Sealant and Reassemble
Apply a generous bead of gutter sealant to both mating surfaces. Press the joint together firmly and refasten the union clip. Wipe away any excess sealant with a damp cloth. Allow 24 hours to cure fully before testing with water.
How to Patch a Hole or Crack
For small holes and hairline cracks in plastic guttering:
- Clean the area around the damage thoroughly with white spirit
- Roughen the surface with coarse sandpaper for better adhesion
- Apply gutter repair tape over the crack, pressing firmly to remove air bubbles
- Apply a layer of gutter sealant over the tape for a belt-and-braces fix
- Allow 24 hours before running water through
For cast iron guttering with pinhole leaks, clean back to bare metal with a wire brush, apply a rust converter like Jenolite, let it dry, then use an epoxy-based metal repair compound like JB Weld or Milliput.
How to Fix a Sagging Gutter
If water pools in one spot rather than flowing to the downpipe, the gutter has lost its fall. Gutters should slope at roughly 1:350 — about 3mm per metre of run towards the downpipe outlet.
You can adjust the fall by repositioning the gutter brackets:
- Set up a string line from the highest point (furthest from the downpipe) to the downpipe outlet
- Check the fall with a tape measure — it should drop about 3mm per metre
- Loosen and reposition any brackets that are out of line
- Retighten all screws and test with water
If the fascia board has rotted where the brackets mount, you’ll need to replace the affected section of fascia before refitting brackets. Family Handyman’s gutter repair guide covers fascia board issues in detail.
Gutter Sealant Comparison
| Product | Best For | Cure Time | Can Apply Wet? |
|---|---|---|---|
| CT1 Sealant | All-purpose, strongest bond | 24 hours | Yes |
| Geocel Plumber’s Gold | Joints and seams | 24 hours | No |
| Evo-Stik Gutter Sealant | Budget option | 48 hours | No |
| Flashing tape | Cracks and holes | Instant | No |
Preventing Future Leaks
- Clean gutters at least twice a year — autumn (after leaf fall) and spring
- Install gutter guards or brush inserts to reduce debris build-up
- Trim back overhanging branches that drop leaves into the gutters
- Check gutter fall annually — frost heave and settlement can shift brackets over time
- Inspect joints each time you clean and reseal any that look suspect
When to Replace Instead of Repair
Consider full gutter replacement if:
- Multiple joints are leaking along the same run
- The plastic is brittle and cracking in multiple places (UV degradation after 20+ years)
- Cast iron gutters have extensive rust and multiple pinholes
- The fascia board behind the gutter is rotten along its length
- The gutter profile is no longer available for replacement parts
A full gutter replacement in standard half-round PVC costs £3–£5 per metre for materials and is a manageable DIY job. It’s a weekend project that saves hundreds over hiring a roofer — just make sure you have safe ladder access and ideally a helper to hold lengths while you fix them in place.
